Top awards at 2019 Smart City Summit & Expo

The sixth annual Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) started Tuesday (March 26) at Taipei’s Nangang Exhibition Center, attended by Taiwan Vice President Chen Chien-jen and Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je.

The four-day event is expected to bring together 128 city representatives, 33,000 professionals from 42 countries, 337 exhibitors at 1,250 booths, and some 36 artificial intelligence (AI) startups from around the world.

Vice President Chen said he had high hopes the implementation of smart technology can solve a wide range of problems. Smart parking solutions, for example, can help drivers quickly find a parking space and thereby reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption.

The use of smart technology in long-term care businesses, meanwhile, can help integrate offline and online data and resources, and that can improve the country’s overall healthcare service, Chen added.

System Integration and Innovative Application Award Ceremony

Nine companies and a dozen government institutions were given awards at the opening ceremony to honor their outstanding contributions to the development and implementation of smart city technologies.

Two system integration award winners were MiTAC Information Technology, and Tatung Company. The innovative application award went to seven companies, including: Gintel Technology, ion Network, Beehive Data Technology, AnaSystem, Amaryllo, and Compal Electronics.

Innovative application award winners from the public sector were New Taipei City Government for smart disaster prevention, Kaohsiung City and Taoyuan City Government for their smart transportation initiatives. The National Health Insurance Administration scooped an award for smart healthcare, and the Institute of Transportation for smart transportation.

Two startup-friendly city awards went to the city governments of Taoyuan City and Hsinchu City.
